About the International Society of Materials Modeling

The International Society of Materials Modeling (ISMM) is a nonprofit professional society dedicated to advancing the science, engineering, and application of materials modeling and simulation. The Society brings together researchers from academia, national laboratories, industry, and government to promote the development and use of modeling approaches that connect materials behavior across length scales, time scales, disciplines, and applications.

ISMM provides an international home for the materials modeling community. Its mission is to support the exchange of ideas, foster scientific collaboration, recognize excellence, and help define future directions in multiscale materials modeling, computational materials science, computational mechanics, materials informatics, and related fields.

Our Origins

The Society grew out of the long-standing International Conference on Multiscale Materials Modeling, known as MMM. The MMM conference series began in 2002 in London and has since developed into a major biennial international forum for researchers working across materials science, mechanics, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, computational science, biomechanics, manufacturing, and related disciplines.

Over the years, MMM has rotated among North America, Europe, and Asia, reflecting the field’s international character and the global nature of the materials modeling community. Past MMM meetings have helped shape the community by bringing together researchers working on atomistic modeling, mesoscale methods, continuum approaches, multiscale and multiphysics modeling, materials informatics, uncertainty quantification, and the integration of modeling with experiments and manufacturing.

The MMM conference remains ISMM's flagship event.

From an International Advisory Board to a Society

For many years, the MMM conference series was guided by an International Advisory Board composed of leading researchers from around the world. Following MMM10, held in Baltimore, Maryland, the International Advisory Board met to discuss the future of the MMM community and voted to create a formal international society, with the MMM conference serving as its flagship conference.

A subgroup of the International Advisory Board then led the formal establishment of the International Society of Materials Modeling as a nonprofit society under U.S. law. The Society was incorporated in the State of Delaware in 2023 as a nonprofit organization organized for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes.

This transition marked an important step in the evolution of the materials modeling community. By creating a formal society, the MMM community established a durable organizational structure to support future conferences, expand membership, promote awards and recognition, strengthen international engagement, and provide continuity across conference cycles.

Governance and Founding Board

ISMM is governed by a Board of Directors in accordance with its bylaws. The bylaws define membership categories, voting procedures, board composition, officer roles, elections, meetings, committees, and other governance procedures.
