Description

The distinction of Fellow of the International Society of Materials Modeling recognizes individuals who have made outstanding and sustained contributions to materials modeling and who have provided significant service, leadership, mentorship, and community-building contributions to the international materials modeling community.

Election as an ISMM Fellow is one of the highest honors conferred by the Society. ISMM Fellows are individuals who have attained distinction through major contributions to the science, engineering, development, application, education, or advancement of materials modeling, together with meaningful service to the profession and the community.

Contributions may include fundamental research, development of modeling methods and computational tools, integration of modeling with experiments and manufacturing, leadership in the materials modeling community, mentorship and education, service to ISMM and the MMM conference series, and efforts that have broadened or strengthened the international materials modeling community.

Selection Principles

Nominees are expected to demonstrate both professional distinction and meaningful service to the materials modeling community. Exceptional research accomplishments alone are not sufficient for election as an ISMM Fellow unless accompanied by evidence of service, leadership, mentorship, or community impact.

The Fellow distinction is intended to recognize individuals whose contributions have advanced the field and strengthened the community that supports it.

Number of Fellows

The number of living ISMM Fellows shall not exceed 100, excluding Senior Fellows.

In a typical election cycle, the number of new Fellows will be limited to approximately 7 to 10 new fellows, consistent with maintaining the distinction and selectivity of the honor. The selection committee is not required to fill all available Fellow positions in any cycle.

For the inaugural class of ISMM Fellows and Senior Fellows, no more than 30 individuals shall be elected in total.

Senior Fellow Designation

ISMM Fellows shall be designated automatically as Senior Fellows upon reaching the age of 75.

Individuals who are 75 years of age or older at the time of nomination may be nominated directly for Senior Fellow status, provided they meet the criteria for election as an ISMM Fellow.

Election as a Senior Fellow requires the same standard of professional distinction, service, leadership, mentorship, and community contribution as election as an ISMM Fellow.

Senior Fellows shall retain the title, recognition, and privileges of ISMM Fellow but shall not count toward the cap of 100 living Fellows.

Eligibility

A nominee for ISMM Fellow or Senior Fellow must be an individual who has made outstanding and sustained contributions to materials modeling and to the broader materials modeling community.

The nominee should meet at least one of the following criteria:

Has attended at least two of the previous five International Conferences on Multiscale Materials Modeling. This eligibility pathway will be retired at the end of 2028.
Has been a member of ISMM for a minimum of four continuous years in the year of nomination.

The nominee must have a record of distinction in multiple areas, including but not limited to:

Fundamental advances in materials modeling theory, methods, or applications.
Development of computational methods, software, databases, workflows, or modeling tools.
Integration of modeling with experimental characterization, materials processing, manufacturing, or design.
Leadership in academia, industry, government, or national laboratories.
Mentorship, education, and training of the next generation of materials modeling researchers.
Service to ISMM, the MMM conference series, or the broader materials modeling community.
Contributions that have broadened participation, strengthened international collaboration, or increased the impact of materials modeling.

Current members of the ISMM Board of Directors are not eligible to be nominated during their term of service. Posthumous nominations are not accepted.

Nominator Eligibility

The nominator must be a researcher who meets at least one of the following criteria:

Has attended at least two of the previous five MMM conferences. This eligibility pathway will be retired at the end of 2026.
Has been a member of ISMM for a minimum of two continuous years.

Current members of the ISMM Board of Directors and members of the ISMM Fellow Selection Committee are not eligible to submit nominations or supporting letters during their term of service.

Self-nominations are not accepted.

Nomination Package

The nomination package must include:

A completed ISMM Fellow or Senior Fellow Nomination Form.
A proposed citation of 25 words or fewer highlighting the nominee's major contributions.
A nomination letter from the nominator, no more than two pages in length, describing the nominee's professional contributions to materials modeling and their service, leadership, mentorship, and community-building contributions.
The nominee's curriculum vitae, no more than ten pages in length.
Up to three supporting letters from individuals familiar with the nominee's contributions and achievements. Each supporting letter should be no more than two pages.
A brief statement describing the nominee's service to ISMM, the MMM conference series, or the broader materials modeling community, if this is not already addressed in the nomination letter.

No more than one of the individuals involved in the nomination, including the nominator and supporting letter writers, should be from the same organization as the nominee.

All documents should be submitted by the nominator as a single PDF file by email with the subject line "ISMM Fellow Nomination" or "ISMM Senior Fellow Nomination" to [insert awards email address].

Deadline

The nomination deadline is August 1st, 2026.

Evaluation

The ISMM Fellow Selection Committee will review all nomination packages for eligibility, completeness, and merit. The deliberations of the committee shall be confidential.

The committee will evaluate nominees based on two primary dimensions:

Professional distinction and impact in materials modeling, including research, methods, tools, applications, education, and translation to practice.
Service, leadership, mentorship, and community contributions, including service to ISMM, the MMM conference series, international community building, broadening participation, organization of scientific meetings, development of community resources, and efforts that strengthen the field.

The committee should consider contributions across academia, industry, government, and national laboratories, and should seek an appropriate balance across the broad areas of materials modeling represented by ISMM.

Recognition

ISMM Fellows and Senior Fellows shall receive life membership in ISMM, including waiver of regular individual membership dues. They shall retain the rights and privileges of individual members, subject to the Society’s bylaws and policies.

New ISMM Fellows and Senior Fellows will be recognized at the International Conference on Multiscale Materials Modeling. Each Fellow or Senior Fellow will receive a certificate or plaque and may use the title "Fellow of the International Society of Materials Modeling," "ISMM Fellow," or "ISMM Senior Fellow," as appropriate.

Recipients are expected to accept the honor in person at the MMM Conference Banquet or another official ISMM recognition event. Exceptions may be granted by the ISMM Board of Directors under unusual circumstances.
